How to Pay Your Property Taxes
Kawartha Lakes offers a variety of payment options, so you can choose the method that is most convenient for you. Whichever option you use, your payment must be received on or before the due date. Late payments are charged penalty and interest.
- Online or telephone banking: pay through your own bank.
- Pre-authorized debit: automatic withdrawals from your bank account, so you never miss a due date.
- Credit card: Pay online or call 1-866-961-2313. A 2.75% service fee applies.
- Mail: send your cheque to P.O. Box 9000, 26 Francis Street, Lindsay, ON, K9V 5R8. Post-dated cheques are not accepted.
- Your financial institution: pay in person before the due date
- Municipal Service Centre: pay in person or use the drop box. Credit cards are not accepted.
Online Banking
You can pay electronically through your online banking institution:
- Add "Kawartha Lakes Taxes" as a payee in your bill payments feature.
- Enter your 19-digit roll number as the account number. You'll find it on your tax bill (it starts with 1651).
Allow enough processing time for your payment to reach the property tax office by the due date, or check with your bank if you're unsure.
Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD)
By enrolling in a pre-authorized debit plan, payments are withdrawn from your account automatically.
Choose from one of three plan options:
| Plan | Withdrawal Dates |
| 10-month plan |
Monthly withdrawals from February 1 to November 1 annually. Payments will be calculated for February 1 – June 1 and recalculated for July 1 - November 1. |
|
12-month plan |
Monthly withdrawals from January 15 to December 15 annually. Payments will be calculated for January 15 – June 15 and recalculated for July 15 – December 15. |
|
Installment due date plan |
The full amount of the installment listed on the bill will be withdrawn on the applicable due dates. |
How to Enroll for Pre-Authorized Debit
Your property tax account must be up to date before signing up for pre-authorized payment. Check this year's due dates on the Property Taxes page if you're unsure whether you missed an installment.
Before you apply, keep in mind:
- PAD plans are not transferable. If you sell and buy another property in Kawartha Lakes, you'll need to apply again.
- This is not an equal billing plan. Your monthly amount is calculated for the interim tax bill and recalculated for the final tax bill.
- Applications received between November 1 and April 30 are enrolled for the next final tax bill, with the first withdrawal in July.
- Applications received between January 1 and April 30 are set up for the current year’s Final Tax bill.
To stop automatic payments, submit the Pre-authorized Debit Cancellation Form.
What happens if you miss a payment?
To avoid penalty and interest charges, ensure payments are received on or before the due date. Late payments are charged on the first day of each month on any outstanding balance:
- Penalty: 1.25% per month on current-year arrears
- Interest: 1.25% per month on prior-year arrears
- Additions to the tax roll: 5% of the amount added ($50 minimum)
If your installments remain unpaid, your account may be issued to a Bailiff for collection, which adds further fees. Once that happens, you'll deal directly with the Bailiff about payments, arrangements, and balances. If you make a payment at City Hall after that point, we'll notify the Bailiff so they can adjust their records.
Paid the wrong account by mistake? Contact the tax office at taxes@kawarthalakes.ca as soon as possible to arrange a transfer. Your first transfer is free; each one after that costs $40.
If Your Bank or Mortgage Company Pays Your Taxes
If your bank or mortgage company pays your property taxes and this isn't noted on the front of your bill, forward the bill to them right away. Your bank or mortgage company must notify the City of Kawartha Lakes in writing when they start (or stop) paying taxes on your behalf.
Need a receipt?
If you pay by mail, send your complete bill with your cheque (don't detach the payment stubs) along with a stamped envelope addressed to yourself. You can also email, fax, or bring your bill to the tax office or any Municipal Service Centre, and we'll stamp it at no cost.
If you've sold your property, the City of Kawartha Lakes is unable to provide a copy of the bill or a receipt in your name. To find out how much tax you paid, review the statement of adjustments your lawyer prepared when the sale closed.
